The splendor of a city in the 16th century. From 24 to 27 July 2014

The second half of July, Tortosa celebrates the FESTA DEL RENAIXEMENT DE TORTOSA. With the subtitle “The Splendor of a City in the 16th Century”, the Festival commemorates, through a wide range of recreational and cultural activities, the historical period of the 16th century, one of the most interesting moments in the existence of Our city.

Tortosa, head of an extensive territory, shows us its pride and strength, its daily life through the city’s government, commerce, customs, courtship, gastronomy and the most diverse expressions of the Festival. The banners of the defense groups that dominate the streets of the city, led by the flag of the Veguería de Tortosa, transport us back in time to the splendor of a city in the 16th century. A city whose history has been determined by the link that the Ebro River gave it with the Mediterranean Sea, a multicultural city open to the world through water.

What is the FESTA DEL RENAIXEMENT DE TORTOSA?

It is the recreation through a wide range of recreational and cultural activities of the development of daily life in the city of Tortosa in the 16th century.

• It is a journey through time that takes us to a time of splendor, unique and exuberant, full of surprises. Through the winding streets and corners of the old town you will find a variety of shows of all kinds, turning the visit into a unique experience.

The recreation of the period covers all social groups, from the nobility to the common people. In this case, daily life through a camp. Comedians and musicians come from all over to liven up the city, always with shows set in the period.

The involvement of citizens with the Festival reaches the point that, during these days, the members of the council become the procurators of the 16th century, dressed in the corresponding clothing and always preceded by maceros.

They liven up their surroundings throughout the day. Furthermore, in the taverns distributed throughout the Festival, the atmosphere is always lively and they guarantee the continuity of the Festival beyond the performances.

• Gastronomy, commerce, clothing, religiosity, protocol, folklore and fun are part of the script of the Festival.
• Citizen participation is essential, both by taking part in the shows with local entities, and by dressing in period clothing and setting the streets.
